Petra Carter

Food has been a part of Petra’s life for as long as she can remember. A childhood steeped in Indonesian food culture was followed by a decade in East Africa where, while running tented safari camps, she first learned about adapting locally available ingredients to world cuisines.

But this was only the beginning of a lifetime career in food… Back in Ireland she trained as chef and subsequently worked in various restaurants and ran a successful catering company. Her first food column appeared in 1984, followed by many regular food features for The Irish Times, Eat, Wine Ireland and many others. She was food editor of Irish Tatler for 10 years and launched, wrote and edited one of Ireland’s first food magazines: SQ Food. After completing a BA in Fine Art, she added food styling and photography to her feature writing activities.

In 2003 Petra moved to the South of France’s Languedoc region but continued to write and photograph food and travel articles for the Irish and International press, while also running cooking courses, art classes and culinary weeks from her B&B in Mirepeisset.  She sold up in 2013 and moved east towards Provence – she now lives in the historic town of Uzes, between Nimes and Avignon, and runs a cooking school.
